The heart of the city is the Piazza del Duomo, with the monumental complex of the Basilica of Santa Maria del Fiore – surmounted by the majestic dome by Brunelleschi – the baptistery of San Giovanni – a magnificent example of Florentine Romanesque art – the bell tower of Giotto – a masterpiece of Florentine Gothic architecture.
Piazza della Signoria represents the historic center and houses the 14th-century Loggia dei Lanzi, the Fountain of Neptune, and the Palazzo della Signoria or Palazzo Vecchio, one of the emblematic monuments of the city, in front of which there are some famous statues including one copy of Michelangelo's famous David. Next to the square is the majestic Uffizi Gallery, one of the most important museums in the world, which houses works by Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and many other great artists.
Also worth seeing are the 16th-century Loggia del Mercato Nuovo, also called Loggia del Porcellino for the characteristic bronze statue, in fact representing a boar, considered a lucky charm, and the grandiose Palazzo Strozzi, with a magnificent inner courtyard.
The medieval district of Santa Croce shows another interesting aspect of the city.
