Travel story
The moment you leave the shore, the scale of the world changes
The mountains close in, the water grows deep, and the sounds fall silent
The farther you go, the more eloquent the scenery becomes
-
This itinerary explores the fjord region of western Norway with a focus on cruise experiences.
By viewing the steep mountains and deep inlets from the sea, you can feel the unique scale and dramatic terrain of the fjords.
Combined with onshore stays, the itinerary is structured to efficiently enjoy representative landscapes such as the Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord.
Signature points
A cruise experience that lets you most impressively feel the fjords
The fjords’ intricate terrain is easier to grasp in its entirety and depth when viewed from the sea. You can continuously enjoy the scale of sheer rock walls, waterfalls, and valleys in an unobstructed setting.
Efficient coverage of iconic fjord landscapes
The itinerary includes Norway’s representative fjords such as the Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord. Even with limited time, the structure allows you to experience these iconic landscapes without strain.
A well-balanced itinerary combined with onshore sightseeing
While centered on cruise experiences, the trip is designed so you can also enjoy nearby towns and natural scenery. It avoids concentrating too much on travel or sightseeing, keeping the fjords’ appeal as the main focus.

Museums in Tromsø
In summer, Tromsø’s museums are rewarding to explore, and the warmer weather makes it easier to combine cultural visits with strolls around the harbor or the university area. The Polar Museum, set in a historic warehouse by the waterfront, is a must-visit for learning about Arctic explorers, trappers, and hunters whose stories shaped Northern Norway’s identity. Close by, the Full Steam Museum & Restaurant offers both exhibits on maritime history and the chance to taste Arctic seafood. Families will enjoy Polaria, with its aquariums, bearded seals, and panoramic films about the northern wilderness—especially appealing as the midnight sun makes the Arctic come alive. For those interested in culture and science, the Tromsø University Museum is a summer highlight, covering Sami heritage, northern wildlife, geology, and the northern lights, and it’s surrounded by the Arctic-Alpine Botanic Garden, which bursts into bloom under 24-hour daylight and is free to enter. The Northern Norwegian Science Center continues to engage visitors with interactive exhibits and Norway’s largest planetarium, while art lovers can explore both the Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum, with its fine art collections, and the Perspektivet Museum, known for thought-provoking photography and cultural exhibitions. For something lighthearted, the Troll Museum adds a playful touch, bringing Norwegian folklore to life through augmented reality.

Arctic Fjord Cruise
Join us for a guided half-day cruise that combines stunning views, rich history, and real local experiences. From panoramic cityscapes to quiet islands and Cold War secrets, this tour gives you a deeper connection to the region, all aboard our hybrid electric catamaran.
As we leave Tromsø behind, you’ll get a new perspective of the city, from the water. With the mainland on our left, we sail past colourful houses, small farms, and quiet roads that give you a glimpse into everyday life in Northern Norway. As we approach the entrance to Ramfjorden, the boat slows down and switches to 100% electric. From here, we glide silently into the fjord.
Holmen Island
Our first destination is Holmen Island, once a remote fishing station turned wartime outpost. During World War II, Holmen played a strategic role, serving as a lookout and minor military base. Today, it stands quietly in the fjord waiting for you to visit. Here, we deploy our underwater drone, revealing life beneath the surface. Through our onboard screens, guests get a unique glimpse of Arctic marine ecosystems, from starfish and kelp forests to crab and cod habitats, all in real time.
Note: Weather and currents on the day of the cruise may result in the cancellation of the drone being used for safety reasons. Terms and conditions apply
Olavsvern - Cold War-era submarine base
Continuing onward, we pass Olavsvern, a decommissioned Cold War-era submarine base carved directly into the mountain. Once one of Norway’s most classified military facilities, Olavsvern remained top secret from the 1950s until it was decommissioned in 2002. Built to withstand nuclear threats and store NATO submarines, the base is a striking reminder of Cold War tensions hidden in plain sight.
Journey to island of Rya
We then cross to the island of Rya, home to a quaint fishing facility. Here, guests disembark for a short land visit that offers a deeper look into life along the northern coast. The stop includes two small museums, a traditional drying rack, and a local tasting surprise, all surrounded by peaceful island scenery.
Inside the museums, you’ll learn how cod fishing shaped life in Northern Norway for thousands of years. One of the highlights is skrei, which remains a vital part of the region’s culture and economy, and you’ll discover how these fish are caught, processed, and turned into Norway’s famous stockfish.
Old maps, dried fish and local flavours
The exhibition areas are small and full of character and you are welcome to explore at your own pace. Pick up and feel old tools, see dried cod on display, and be amazed at old black-and-white photos of local fisheries from decades ago. Weather-worn clothing once used by fishermen hangs on the walls. It’s a hands-on, personal way to connect with the past.
Before heading back to the boat, we invite you to enjoy a local tasting, a small sample of Tromsø’s fishing heritage. Whether it’s dried fish, roe, or a seasonal bite, it’s a chance to try something traditional. A final flavour to match the surroundings, before we sail on.
Tromsøya and Håkøya
On our way back, we cruise by Tromsøya and Håkøya. These islands carry stories of WWII, including air raids and the sinking of the German battleship Tirpitz, alongside peaceful glimpses of modern island life today. Here our guides will point out all the key parts of land to look at while they share with you the history of the waters.
After a day of stories, scenery, and sea air, we begin our journey back to Tromsø. As we cruise through the last stretch of fjord, you’ll have time to relax, take in the views, and reflect on everything you’ve seen and learned.
We look forward to welcoming you on board for this in-person, guided cruise, where history, nature, and local life come together in one unforgettable experience from Tromsø.
