When the garden was founded it was placed outside the city’s moats, but today it’s located right next to the Central station and within walking distance of City hall.

Junibacken was created after an idea by Staffan Götestam , the older brother of the Brothers Lionheart. He got Astrid Lindgren on board with the idea, but only if the museum also had space for children's book characters other than Lindgren's .

Today, Junibacken is Sweden's best children's museum . Here, the little ones - and the big ones - can experience a number of famous children's book characters. Astrid Lindgren's Emil in Lønneberget , Karlsson on the Roof and Pippi Longstocking , in addition to other famous children's book characters such as Albert Åberg and the Moomin troll can be experienced at Junibacken.

At Junibacken, all the famous children's book characters come to life through theatrical performances and environments taken from the children's books. The various children's book environments are designed so that the youngest can play in and experience famous places such as Villa Villekulla and Lønneberget.
