Travel story
The sea splits and whales appear
The sky tears through the darkness and light streaks across
In this place, both day and night are extraordinary
-
This is an itinerary focused on natural phenomena: observing whales and orcas that gather in the Arctic sea during the day and concentrating on aurora viewing unique to high latitudes at night.
Based in Tromsø, actions are taken according to sea and weather conditions to secure ample opportunities for both whales and auroras.
The plan minimizes sightseeing and is designed to let you experience the scale and dynamism that can only occur in the Arctic.
Signature points
Whales encountered in the Arctic seas
Stay in an area where you can observe whales that gather at feeding grounds, and set out according to sea conditions. Breaching, fluke-ups, and other movements by whales over ten meters long unfold across your view, letting you experience a sense of scale you can’t get from land-based tours.
An environment that allows you to focus on aurora viewing at night
Located at high latitude, the area is well suited for aurora viewing at night. By separating daytime activities and designing nights to focus on the sky, observation opportunities are maximized even with a limited stay.
Base selection optimized for natural phenomena
Basing in Tromsø ensures easy access to both sea and sky. Not making urban sightseeing the primary goal and remaining flexible according to weather and sea conditions enhances the feasibility of this nature-phenomena-focused itinerary.

Welcome to Tromsø!
Welcome to Tromsø, the largest city in Northern Norway!
Surrounded by snowcapped mountains, Tromsø is a lively place with 65,000 inhabitants. In addition to its lovely scenery and rich history, the city has a large student population and is famous for its robust music and film culture, so get out and explore this self-proclaimed 'Gateway to the Arctic'.
A good place to start is taking a ride on the cable car, which runs up to a mountain ledge in just four minutes. The two gondolas, known as Seal and Polar Bear, each have a capacity of 28 passengers. From the viewing platform at the upper station, you can enjoy spectacular panoramic views of Tromsø and the surrounding islands, mountains, and fjords.
If you want to stay for dinner, Fjellstua restaurant on top offers dinner with views. Otherwise, head back down to Tromsø for a variety of pubs and restaurants.

1st Night of Northern Lights Chasing
Experience the magic of the Northern Lights on a comfortable chase designed to give you a great chance of witnessing this natural wonder. Our modern and spacious Big Bus offers warmth and shelter as we explore the Arctic regions, guided by our expert Northern Lights guides.
The journey begins in Tromsø’s city centre, where we’ll set out to find the best weather conditions that night. Our flexible route may take us along the coast or deep into the inland regions, even across the border into Finland. Along the way, our guides will share insights about the Northern Lights and photography tips, answering any questions you may have.
In recent years, the roads have become busier, with many other vehicles also chasing the lights. This means that scenic foregrounds can sometimes be difficult to access, and our stops may be alongside roads or more populated areas. We always aim to give you the best possible view, but the focus of this tour is finding clear skies and maximizing your chance of seeing the aurora. We stay in touch with fellow guides to decide whether to stay put or move in search of better conditions.
To keep you comfortable, we provide hot berry juice and hot water (please bring your own meal if you’d like, though we kindly ask you to eat outside the bus). While the bus is heated, please note that on particularly cold nights, it may cool down over time. Dressing in warm layers is recommended to ensure you stay cozy throughout the chase.
Please note: This tour includes photographs taken by our guides at no extra charge.
Includes:
Full-resolution photographs from the tour (jpeg format)
Guided by our dedicated team of Guides
Chocolate cookies & hot berry juice
Photography tips and advice from our guides
On-board restroom (when available)
Tour duration: 5-9 hours (weather dependent)

Silent Whale Watching by hybrid-electric ship
Get a unique and intimate perspective on the giants of the north — orcas, humpback, fin and sperm whales. Unlike traditional vessels, our boats are designed for Arctic whale watching, operating silently in electric mode to ensure minimal disturbance to the ocean and its inhabitants. This means not only better animal welfare — but also a serene guest experience.
Designed for Your Comfort
All our vessels are built specifically for sightseeing and whale watching in the Arctic. Inside, warm lounges with floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows and three spacious outside decks give you a front-row seat to the Arctic scenery. Our Nordic design shines through in clean lines, natural materials and understated elegance. Onboard, you can enjoy local specialities and a fully licensed bar.
Our lounges are heated but we encourage guests to bring warm outerwear — wool layers, a hat and gloves — to enjoy the whales from our spacious decks outside in the fresh arctic winter.
We depart Tromsø in the crisp Arctic morning, setting course for the whales’ feeding grounds. On the way, you can enjoy the majestic fjords, snow-capped mountains and frozen seascapes from our silent, sustainable vessel — the only boats in Tromsø purpose-built for whale watching in the arctic. We time our arrival to coincide with the few hours of polar daylight, ensuring you get to spend as much time whale watching as possible.
Our captains and guides are constantly on the lookout, using both experience and science to spot whales. While we search, our experienced guides share personal stories from fascinating insights into the whales’ behaviour, migration and feeding to Arctic life history and culture. This turns the journey itself into part of the adventure.
When the whales are sighted, we switch seamlessly to our fully electric motor, reducing noise and vibration, so we can go whale watching quietly and respectfully. This ensures a dignified, ethical approach to whale watching that puts animal welfare first.
Note: Tour duration depends on the whales’ location and normally ranges from 8–9 hours. The season varies, but is typically late October to end of January. While our crew works tirelessly to find whales, sightings cannot be guaranteed.
