Travel story
A fire older than bone
illuminated the rift of night
silence existed before prayer
—
On this journey, you will tour northern and eastern Ethiopia, encountering the diversity of its history, religions, and natural environments.
Starting from the capital, Addis Ababa, you will set out to the walled Islamic city of Harar, pass through Gondar and Lalibela where Christian architecture remains, and ultimately reach the Danakil Depression, including the Dallol salt fields and the Erta Ale volcano.
The travel distances are long, but by crossing multiple cultural zones and terrain types that make up Ethiopia, the itinerary is designed to capture the country not as a tourist destination but as a landscape where daily life and faith are intertwined.
Signature points
Visit regions with different cultural spheres and religions at once
The itinerary crosses multiple regions with differing religious backgrounds and lifestyles: Harar, a center of Islamic culture; Lalibela, a Christian holy site; and Gondar, which retains remnants of the imperial era. Through comparison, you can sense the multilayered contours of culture.
Experience extreme natural environments such as volcanoes, salt lakes, and rift zones
In the Danakil Depression you will walk through natural environments that are exceptional even on a global scale, including the sulfur fields of Dallol, salt plains, and the lava of the Erta Ale volcano. Camping in harsh environments is also included.
Introduction combining historical architecture, archaeological heritage, and museum exhibits
In Addis Ababa you will visit the National Museum to see human fossils from millions of years ago (Lucy). By encountering traces of the past in the first half of the trip, the itinerary is structured to deepen understanding of the subsequent religious architecture and everyday culture.

A city surrounded by high stone walls, with five gates in the walls and 25 towers along the top. Harar is considered the fourth holiest center in the Islamic world, symbolized by the Grand Mosque (Al-Jami) that dominates the town.
Harar is also known for elaborate jewelry made with silver, gold, and amber. The Megalo Gogo market in Harar is a hub selling beautiful baskets woven from grasses, decorative wall mats, vibrant shawls, and also fruits, vegetables, spices, and grains.

Lalibela
Overview of Lalibela
Lalibela, also called the "New Jerusalem," is one of the world's most astonishing holy sites, featuring 11 medieval rock-hewn churches. All of these churches are carved from single pieces of rock.
Lalibela is said to have been constructed in the 12th century by King Lalibela of the Zagwe dynasty with "angelic help," and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Features of Lalibela
Because the churches are carved below ground level, they are surrounded by trenches and courtyards, and are connected by stone tombs, hermit dwellings, and complex tunnels and passageways.
The 11 rock-hewn churches are divided into two groups and are visited on foot. Some steps are irregular and require a degree of agility.
The most famous church is Bet Giyorgis (St. George), carved from a single monolith.
Historical background
The churches of Lalibela are estimated to have been built over about 25 years, reflecting the prosperity of the Zagwe dynasty. The region was fertile and agriculturally productive, which likely allowed the maintenance of a large workforce over a long period.
