Travel story
A fire older than bones
illuminated the rift of night
silence existed before prayer
—
On this journey, you will travel through northern and eastern Ethiopia, encountering the diversity of its history, religions, and natural environments.
Starting from the capital Addis Ababa, you visit the walled Islamic city of Harar, the Christian architectural sites of Gondar and Lalibela, and ultimately reach the Danakil Lowlands, including the Dallol salt flats and the Erta Ale volcano.
Although the distances traveled are long, the itinerary crosses multiple cultural and geographic zones that make up Ethiopia, presenting the country not merely as a tourist destination but as a landscape shaped by everyday life and faith.
Signature points
Visit regions with different cultural spheres and religions in one trip
The itinerary crosses multiple regions with distinct religious backgrounds and ways of life—Harar as a center of Islamic culture, Lalibela as a Christian holy site, and Gondar with remnants of the imperial era. Through comparison, you can grasp the multilayered contours of these cultures.
Experience extreme natural environments such as volcanoes, salt lakes, and rift zones
In the Danakil Lowlands you will walk through earth’s uniquely extreme environments, including the sulfur fields of Dallol, salt flats, and the lava of Erta Ale volcano. The trip includes camping in harsh environments.
Introduction combining historic architecture, archaeological heritage, and museum materials
In Addis Ababa you will visit the National Museum to see human fossils from millions of years ago ("Lucy"). By encountering traces of the past in the first half of the trip, the itinerary is designed to deepen understanding of the subsequent religious architecture and living cultures.

Harar
A city surrounded by high stone walls, featuring five gates and 25 towers on top. This walled medieval city is located among green hills near the eastern escarpment of the Rift Valley, close to the border with Somalia. Harar's cultural heritage is almost entirely based on Islamic and Eastern cultures, with 90 mosques and shrines. Harar is considered the fourth holiest center in the Islamic world. The Grand Mosque (Al-Jami), which dominates the town, is a symbol of this.
Harar is also famous for intricate jewelry crafted from silver, gold, and amber. Harar's Megalo Gogo market is a center selling beautiful woven baskets, decorative wall mats, vibrant shawls, as well as fruits, vegetables, spices, and grains.

Lalibela
Overview of Lalibela
Lalibela is one of the world’s most astonishing holy sites, often called the "New Jerusalem", and is home to 11 medieval rock-hewn churches. All of these churches were carved from a single piece of rock.
Lalibela is said to have been built in the 12th century by King Lalibela of the Zagwe dynasty with the help of angels, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Features of Lalibela
Because the churches are carved below ground level, they are surrounded by trenches and courtyards, and are connected by stone tombs, hermit dwellings, and complex tunnels and passages.
The 11 rock-hewn churches are divided into two groups that are visited on foot. Some steps are irregular and require a degree of agility.
Among the most famous is Bet Giyorgis (Church of St. George), carved from a single rock.
Historical background
The churches of Lalibela are estimated to have been constructed over a period of about 25 years, reflecting the prosperity of the Zagwe dynasty. The region’s fertile land and strong agricultural production likely sustained a large workforce over an extended period.
