Travel story
A fire older than bone
illuminates the rift of night
silence existed before prayer
—
On this journey, you will travel through northern and eastern Ethiopia, encountering the diversity of history, religion, and natural environments.
Starting from the capital Addis Ababa, you will pass through the walled Islamic city of Harar, the Christian architectural sites of Gondar and Lalibela, and ultimately reach the Danakil Depression, including the Dallol salt lake and the Erta Ale volcano.
Although the distances traveled are long, the itinerary crosses multiple cultural zones and physiographic regions that make up Ethiopia, offering a perspective of the country not as a tourist destination but as a landscape where daily life and faith are intertwined.
Signature points
Visit regions with different cultural spheres and religions at once
The itinerary crosses multiple areas with differing religious backgrounds and lifestyles, such as Harar, a center of Islamic culture; Lalibela, a Christian holy site; and Gondar, which retains remnants of its dynastic era. Through comparison, you can grasp the multilayered contours of these cultures.
Experience extreme natural environments like volcanoes, salt lakes, and fault zones
In the Danakil Depression, you will walk through uniquely extreme natural environments on a global scale, such as the sulfur fields of Dallol, salt flats, and the lava of the Erta Ale volcano. The trip also includes camping overnight in harsh environments.
An introduction combining historical architecture, archaeological heritage, and museum materials
In Addis Ababa, visit the National Museum to view hominid fossils (Lucy) from millions of years ago. By encountering traces of the past in the first half of the trip, the itinerary is designed to deepen understanding of the subsequent religious architecture and living cultures.

Harar
A city surrounded by high stone walls, the walls have five gates and 25 towers placed on top. This medieval walled city is located among green mountains, near the eastern wall of the Great Rift Valley, close to the border with Somalia. Harar's cultural heritage is almost entirely based on Islam and Oriental culture, and there are 90 mosques and shrines. Harar is considered the fourth holiest center in the Islamic world. As its symbol, the Grand Mosque (Al-Jami) that dominates the town is cited.
Harar is also known for intricate jewelry crafted with silver, gold, and amber. Harar's Megalo Gugu Market is a center that sells beautiful baskets made of woven grass, decorative wall-hanging mats, vibrant shawls, and even fruits, vegetables, spices, and grains.

Overview of Lalibela
Lalibela is one of the world's most remarkable holy sites, also called "New Jerusalem", and contains 11 medieval rock-hewn churches. These churches are all carved from a single piece of rock.
Lalibela is said to have been built in the 12th century by King Lalibela of the Zagwe dynasty with the "help of angels", and it is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Features of Lalibela
Because the churches are carved below ground level, they are surrounded by trenches and courtyards, which are connected by rock tombs, hermit dwellings, and complex tunnels and passageways.
The 11 rock-hewn churches are divided into two groups and are visited on foot. Some stairs are irregular and require some agility.
Among the particularly famous churches is Bet Giyorgis (Church of St. George), carved from a single rock.
Historical background
The churches of Lalibela are estimated to have been built over about 25 years, reflecting the prosperity of the Zagwe dynasty. The area was fertile and agricultural production was thriving, so it is believed they could sustain a large workforce for an extended period.
