Travel story
Passing through the blue town and the maze, to the Sahara.
See out the year with the sunset, and wait for the first sunrise on the sand dunes.
The new year begins from a golden horizon.
—
This is a New Year’s tour around Morocco visiting the blue town of Chefchaouen and the maze city of Fez, crossing the Atlas Mountains toward the Sahara Desert. On New Year’s Eve you ride a camel across dunes dyed by the sunset and stay at a desert camp. On New Year’s Day you greet the first sunrise on a vast dune wrapped in silence, then follow varied landscapes via Todra Gorge and Ait Ben Haddou to the red city of Marrakech.
Signature points
From the blue town to the maze city, tracing Morocco by color
In Chefchaouen, stroll through a magical old town woven from blue-painted buildings and alleys. In Fez, enter the medina with over a thousand years of history and visit the royal palace gate, the Jewish quarter, Al-Qarawiyyin University, and traditional leather tanneries. The serene blue town and the lively maze of the ancient capital each reveal different faces of Morocco.
See out the year with the sunset and greet the first sunrise on the dunes
On New Year’s Eve you cross the Atlas Mountains and the Ziz Valley to the Merzouga Sahara. Ride a camel across the great dunes dyed by the sunset and spend the last night of the year at a desert camp. On New Year’s Day, enjoy a special moment unique to the season as you watch the dunes gradually turn golden in silence and greet the first sunrise.
Spectacular road to the red ancient city past gorges and fortresses
After leaving the Sahara, explore the Todra Gorge with its towering rock walls and drive through the Dades Valley. Visit Ait Ben Haddou, once a thriving hub of Saharan trade, then cross the Tizi n'Tichka Pass at 2,260 meters to Marrakech. As you travel, the scenery changes, letting you experience the grand scale of Morocco’s landscapes.
