Travel story
This is a year-end/new-year journey following the history and prayers of North India from Delhi to Agra, Jaipur and the sacred city of Varanasi. In Agra you visit the white-marble Taj Mahal and the red-sandstone Agra Fort. On the way to Jaipur you stop at the geometric stepped well Chand Baori, and explore royal-era architecture such as the City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Amber Fort. In Varanasi, reached by overnight train, you witness the Ganga Aarti on New Year’s Eve at the Ganges and watch the first sunrise of the year from a boat in the early hours of New Year’s Day. You also visit the Buddhist ruins at Sarnath and stroll the streets of Old Delhi, experiencing both the magnificent legacy of empires and the enduring faith of its people.
Signature points
From white-marble mausoleums to royal fortresses — exploring North Indian architecture
In Agra you visit the Taj Mahal, celebrated as a masterpiece of Mughal architecture, and Agra Fort, surrounded by sturdy red-sandstone walls. On the way to Jaipur you stop at Chand Baori, whose countless steps form geometric patterns, and in the city tour the City Palace and the large astronomical observatory Jantar Mantar. You also visit Amber Fort to trace the differing architectural beauties of various eras and dynasties.
See out the year with flames of prayer and greet the Ganges sunrise
On New Year’s Eve attend the Ganga Aarti on the banks of the Ganges in sacred Varanasi. Surrounded by priests holding flames and the sounds of prayer, you spend the final night of the year. In the early hours of New Year’s Day you set out by boat to watch the first sunrise, observing people bathing and praying, the ghats and temples. It’s a special experience to begin the new year in a place where deep faith and daily life overlap.
Connecting royal cities and holy sites by sleeper train
Travel across North India twice by overnight trains: from Jaipur to Varanasi, and from Varanasi to Delhi. The time moving from cities of royal splendor to sacred places of prayer, with landscapes unfolding outside the window, is part of this journey’s charm. In Varanasi visit the old town’s alleys and the Buddhist holy site of Sarnath; toward the end of the trip take a rickshaw tour of Old Delhi to experience India’s depth shaped by multiple religions and a long history.
