  • Private Driver Guide to Skye This morning, you will be picked up from your hotel in Inverness and taken to your next stay on the beautiful Isle of Skye.

The Isle of Skye (an t-Eilean Sgiathanach in Gaelic) takes its name from the old Norse sky-a, meaning ‘cloud island’, a Viking reference to the often-mist-enshrouded Cuillin Hills.

Skye is a must for nature lovers and those seeking breathtaking landscapes. It is the second-largest of Scotland’s islands, a 50-mile-long patchwork of velvet moors, jagged mountains, sparkling lochs, and towering sea cliffs.

The stunning scenery is the main attraction, but when the mist closes in, there are plenty of castles, crofting museums, and cosy pubs and restaurants; there are also dozens of art galleries and craft studios.

The journey takes approximately 3 hours direct, but with plenty of time for sightseeing and memorable stops along the way, the journey promises to be a highlight in itself. [English Guide]
  • Eilean Donan Castle On the way to Skye, you will have the opportunity to make a stop to visit Eilean Donan Castle.

Situated on an island at the point where three great sea lochs meet and surrounded by some majestic scenery, it is little wonder that the castle is now one of the most visited and important attractions in the Scottish Highlands. Offering views of the surrounding mountains and Loch Duich, it makes for a photographer's dream.

Although first inhabited around the 6th century, the first fortified castle was built in the mid-13th century and stood guard over the lands of Kintail. Since then, at least four different versions of the castle have been built and rebuilt as the feudal history of Scotland unfolded through the centuries.

Not only is Eilean Donan Castle visually stunning, but it has also featured in several movies, which adds to its allure. It is also steeped in history, dating back to the 13th century. [English Guide]

It is one of the largest and most historically and architecturally important castles in Scotland. The castle sits atop an intrusive crag, which forms part of the Stirling Sill geological formation.

Generations of Scottish monarchs have enlarged, adapted and embellished Stirling Castle. Explore its three main enclosures, and then admire the refurbished Royal Palace – childhood home of Mary Queen of Scots. The palace’s lavish design drew on European Renaissance fashions to show off James V’s power and good taste.

Today, visitors can explore the castle's stunning architecture, visit the Great Hall and learn about the stories of its past. [English Guide]
