Travel story
On the cracked earth, time sinks
Footprints become bones, and bones become stories
A slow journey through winds that have blown since before humans were born
—
Centered on the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, this trip visits the Olduvai Gorge and Laetoli, with the primary purpose of tracing on site where and how traces of humankind were found. Rather than a safari focused on counting animals, it observes landscapes shaped by volcanic activity, the scale of the rift valley, and ecosystems adapted to those environments, including the movements themselves. Through interactions with the Hadza people who continue a hunter-gatherer lifestyle around Lake Eyasi, the itinerary touches on "present-day lives" that lie on the continuum of human history.
Signature points
Lake Natron: a place to "feel" the rift valley
Lake Natron, shaped by volcanic activity and its alkaline waters, is an area with a distinctive landscape even within Tanzania. The reddened lake surface, sheer cliffs, and distant mountain ranges convey the scale of the rift valley both visually and physically. Travel and stays here become opportunities for observing geology itself.
Olduvai Gorge: standing at the heart of human history
At Olduvai Gorge, you won't just see museum exhibits but will view the very terrain where archaeological sites spread, gaining an understanding of the contexts in which human fossils and stone tools were discovered. The layering of strata and the shape of the valley itself are active witnesses to the timeline of human evolution. This is a visit of high intellectual density, well suited as the trip's primary focus.
Hadza hunting experience: "human history continuing into the present"
Accompany the Hadza around Lake Eyasi, who continue a hunter-gatherer lifestyle, and experience hunting with bows and arrows and their relationship with nature. These are not tourist performances but everyday practices that make you realize human history is not just in the past but "continues now." The knowledge gained at Olduvai Gorge connects here in three dimensions.
