Travel story
This itinerary tracing the origins of Buddhism proceeds after arrival in Delhi with a fast train to Lucknow and then by private vehicle to places associated with the Buddha. First, visit Maya Devi Temple and the Ashoka pillar in Lumbini, Nepal, which mark his birthplace. Next, make a pilgrimage to Kushinagar in India, the site of his parinirvana, and in Varanasi experience the Ganga Aarti at dusk and a dawn boat ride on the Ganges to feel the presence of water and prayer. At Sarnath visit the ruins and museum associated with the first turning of the Dharma wheel. Continue to Bodh Gaya to worship and meditate at the Mahabodhi Temple, and extend visits to the Niranjana River and the village of Sujata, connecting the four great Buddhist sites of birth, enlightenment, first teaching, and passing away in a single route. With Japanese-speaking guides, private vehicles, trains, and domestic flights combined, this pilgrimage offers both the security and depth to quietly follow the "path of prayer".
