About Fes
Fes is Morocco's oldest imperial capital and one of the most interesting and stimulating places. It has a medina that is the most completely preserved in the Arab world and has remained largely unchanged since its founding over 1,000 years ago. Considered the cultural capital, Fes consists of three areas: Fes el-Bali (old city), Fes el-Jdid (new city), and the modern Ville Nouvelle influenced by the French colonial era.
-
Marinid Tombs
Before stepping into the medina (old city), visit the Marinid Tombs on the hill to get a panoramic view of the medieval town. A visit at dusk is especially recommended. As the call to prayer from the muezzin echoes across the valley and the city lights begin to shine, you can experience a special atmosphere.

Al-Qarawiyyin University, Bou Inania Madrasa, Tanneries
Meet your guide and spend half a day walking the narrow streets of the medina while learning about its history and culture.
Bab Boujloud gate of Fes el-Bali
Start here and proceed along the main street, Tala'a Kebira. Note the architectural influences from Spain and Tunisia as you pass shops and souks (markets).
Tanneries
One of the most unique sights in the old medina is the tanneries, with the famous Chouara Tannery being particularly notable. Climb onto the rooftops of nearby leather shops to look down at the stone dyeing vats that date back to the 11th century and watch artisans still using centuries-old techniques.
Al-Attarine Madrasa
Built in the 14th century, this structure is a beautiful example of Moroccan architecture and craftsmanship, featuring intricate zellij (tilework).
Al-Qarawiyyin University
One of the oldest continuously operating universities in the world, adjacent to the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque (founded in 859). Non-Muslims cannot enter the mosque, but you can catch glimpses of its interior decorations from certain spots.
