Travel story
An 8-day self-drive journey exploring the great outdoors of New Zealand's South Island. After arriving in Queenstown, pick up your rental car with assistance from a Japanese-speaking staff member and head to Mount Cook, embraced by the majestic Southern Alps. The next day, take a half-day Hooker Valley hike to walk through the grand valley sculpted by glaciers and feel the power of nature. The trip continues to Lake Tekapo, where the milky-blue waters and the Church of the Good Shepherd create one of the South Island's top photo spots. Then move on to Christchurch for several days of free time to enjoy wandering the city and visiting cafés at your leisure. In Kaikoura, join a whale-watching cruise for a special experience encountering whales that live in the vast ocean. This itinerary is full of freedom and discovery that only a self-drive trip can offer, set amid the overwhelming nature and tranquility unique to the South Island.
