The name means "port of the sirocco", or rather located to the south-east, in Maltese. Marsaxlokk is one of the most characteristic ports, and it is also one of the richest markets on the island; in fact from here come the largest quantities of fish sold on the island. In particular, swordfish, tuna and dolphinfish are caught in abundance in the period between spring and autumn. During the week the catch is sold in Valletta, on Sunday directly in the port.

The megalithic temples of Tarxien perfectly reflect the construction techniques of the first civilizations that populated Malta. Marvel at this building from the year 2800 BC. They are the most recent megalithic temples on the island and, therefore, the best preserved. In 1913, local farmers discovered them by accident and, later, the temples were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This religious complex consists of four temples built between 3000 and 2500 BC. During the archaeological excavations, sharp objects and bones of animals were discovered which would suggest that funeral rites were practised inside with animal sacrifices. In addition, many semicircular rooms have carved stone altars with spiral motifs. This type of decoration, which is repeated in other megalithic temples in Malta, refers to eternity and life. Visiting the Tarxien temples, you can see the sculpture of an ancient fertility goddess.

Suggested activities and visits in the surroundings:
Explore the Three Cities
The Three Cities in Malta, also known as Cottonera, consist of three historic fortified towns: Vittoriosa (Birgu), Senglea (Isla), and Cospicua (Bormla).
Vittoriosa dates back to Phoenician times but gained prominence during the Order of Saint John’s rule. Visit Fort Saint Angelo, built on the ancient Castrum Maris site, and explore the narrow streets. Discover Malta's role in WWII at the Malta at War Musem.
Senglea was founded after the 1551 attack, and it sits on the L’Isola peninsula. Explore the charming streets and visit Fort Saint Michael.
Cospicua was granted the city status in 1722 by Grandmaster Marc’Antonio Zondadari. Around Cospicua, admire the Cottonera Lines.
Remember, these cities are rich in history and architectural gems, so take your time exploring!
Note: the Three Cities are connected to Valletta by a ferry service. (ticket not included).
