Travel story
The wind walks ahead, and footsteps follow it
As the valley opens and the ridge draws near, breathing settles
Being immersed in the scenery itself becomes the purpose: hiking in Switzerland
—
This is a Swiss hiking journey that centers on train travel linking alpine valleys and ridgelines, where you enjoy the time spent walking itself.
You accumulate moments when the view opens up, such as the Mannlichen–Kleine Scheidegg panorama trail and gentle routes crossing the Lauterbrunnen Valley.
After walking, you steady your breathing with stays in lakeside towns or at the mountain base, spending several days attuned to the rhythm of nature.
Signature points
An itinerary where hiking and trails take center stage
The plan raises elevation by train and gondola and links manageable routes to walk. The process of moving from valley to ridge, with the view changing little by little, becomes the experience itself, leaving the landscape as a bodily sensation rather than just a photo.
The panoramic train ride is a highlight in itself
Train travel in Switzerland is not merely a “vehicle” to carry you past scenery, but an experience to place you within it. Time spent gazing at the continuous mountain views through large windows becomes a co-star alongside the hikes.
A natural rhythm of walking, viewing, and resting
Move your body by walking, surrender to the scenery on the train, and steady your breath in towns and by lakes. The itinerary is arranged so that this repetition continues effortlessly, allowing you to enjoy the trip lightly until the end.

Hike from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg
Take a short train ride to Lauterbrunnen to start this 8 km hike, which takes about 2 hours.
This hike crosses the Lauterbrunnen Valley. The Trümmelbach Falls, located about halfway along the route, are truly impressive: inside the mountain, Europe’s largest underground waterfalls cascade down ten levels, accessible via a maze of stairs and galleries. The meltwater from the Jungfrau Glacier pours into the valley at an astonishing 20,000 litres per second, carrying over 20,000 tonnes of debris and making the entire mountain rumble.
The hike continues past the Mürrenbachfall, Switzerland’s highest waterfall, and follows the icy blue Lütschine River to Stechelberg. In this peaceful resort, a cable car takes you up to the Schilthorn – made world-famous by 007, with the name Piz Gloria originating from the Bond novel On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
At the end of the hike, a bus returns hikers from Stechelberg to Lauterbrunnen, or you can take the train to Grindelwald for your fondue!
Tickets for the Trümmelbach Falls are not included and can be purchased on site. It's around 16 CHF per person.

Scenic Hike from Rotenboden to Riffelberg
On the way back, stop at Rotenboden and start your hike to Riffelberg. It’s a 3.1 km hike, mostly downhill, which will take about 1 hour.
The hike starts at Rotenboden station, where you can already catch a glimpse of Lake Riffelsee to the left of the tracks (looking toward the valley). The famous Lake Riffelsee is a spectacular photo spot, especially in the early morning or evening. On calm days, the Matterhorn is perfectly reflected on the water’s surface.
If you pass by Lake Riffelsee, you will come across a smaller second lake, which also deserves a photo stop.
From there, several routes lead to Riffelberg. We take the westernmost path via Gagenhaupt, which is the least crowded trail.
