Travel story
For over a thousand years, the Silk Road has facilitated trade between East and West. This journey traverses Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan by land, allowing you to experience the history, culture, and nature of these two contrasting countries all at once. From the modern vibrancy of Tashkent to the walled old town of Khiva, the suddenly appearing mausoleums of Kunya-Urgench in the desert, and the burning Darvaza 'Gate to Hell' in the dark night, to the white marble new capital of Ashgabat—this is a 10-day journey connecting landscapes where the ancient and the present intersect, walking, tasting, and conversing deeply with a local guide.

Overview of Silk Road World Heritage Sites
Efficiently visit UNESCO registered heritage sites scattered across the two countries, including the walled city of Itchan Kala and the Turabek Khanum mausoleum in Kunya-Urgench. A knowledgeable Japanese guide will explain the blue tiles of Islamic architecture and the memories of caravans left on the minarets, along with the historical context. Starry Night at Darvaza 'Gate to Hell'
The night view of the massive 60m diameter crater spewing crimson flames is a world that can only be experienced in the desert. At the Sunday-only Turkmenbashi Bazaar, shop for goods rich in nomadic culture, such as carpets, spices, and camel-patterned fabrics, at local prices. For lunch, compare local dishes like Khiva's specialty, Shuvit Osh. In the afternoon, visit a stable that raises the nationally proud Akhal-Teke breed and observe the golden horses up close. Follow the 'arteries' of the Silk Road—trade, food, and horse culture—with all five senses.
