Valletta, the fortress city, Citta 'Umilissima", a city built by gentlemen for gentlemen" is the capital of Malta: a lively and active city, the administrative and commercial heart of the islands.

Valletta is named after its founder, the respected Grand Master of the Order of Saint John, Jean Parisot de la Valette. The magnificent fortress town developed on the barren rock of the Mount Sceberras peninsula, which rises steeply from two deep harbors, Marsamxett and Grand Harbor. Begun in 1566, the construction of Valletta was completed in just 15 years!

The city is lively by day, but retains a timeless atmosphere at night, making you feel like you're stepping back in time. The network of narrow streets is home to some of Europe’s finest works of art, churches and palaces.

Valletta is full of sites to see and explore, with fascinating historic buildings on every corner: votive statues, niches, fountains and coats of arms on parapets. The narrow side streets are full of quaint little shops and cafes, while the main streets of Valletta are lined with larger international brand boutiques of fashion, music, jewelry and more.

The best way to get around and see the most, from your visit to Valletta, is on foot and while there are plenty of things to do and see, a great start and one not to be missed are the beautiful gardens of Valletta . Upper Barrakka Gardens, Hastings Gardens, and Lower Barrakka Gardens are just three of the most popular, but upon further exploration there are many more hidden gardens that can be discovered. From the Upper Barrakka Gardens it is also possible to see the Salvation Battery and take the elevator down the bastions to sea level. The St. John's Co-Cathedral and Museum are not to be missed, this richly adorned church is home to world-famous artistic masterpieces by Caravaggio and Mattia Preti. Besides the beautiful Baroque churches, other places of interest include the various inns, squares and museums of the great masters.

Not to be missed if you're interested in WWII the War HQ Tunnels.

  • Malta - Marsaxlokk
  • Marsaxlokk Your first stop is the picturesque fishing village of Marsaxlokk, where you’ll have around 2 hours to explore the colorful waterfront, browse the local market, and enjoy the relaxed seaside atmosphere.
  • Image from PlaceId: ChIJ5-yEpZ5bDhMRqx_47sj3AO4 Image from PlaceId: ChIJ5-yEpZ5bDhMRqx_47sj3AO4 Image from PlaceId: ChIJ5-yEpZ5bDhMRqx_47sj3AO4 Image from PlaceId: ChIJ5-yEpZ5bDhMRqx_47sj3AO4 Image from PlaceId: ChIJ5-yEpZ5bDhMRqx_47sj3AO4 Image from PlaceId: ChIJ5-yEpZ5bDhMRqx_47sj3AO4
  • Wander Around Marsaxlokk 📸 Free Time & Exploration

Located on the southeastern coast of Malta, Marsaxlokk (pronounced mar-sa-shlok) is a picturesque fishing village whose name means “port of the sirocco”, referring to its position facing the warm southeast winds. Known for its colorful luzzus—traditional fishing boats with painted eyes on the bow—Marsaxlokk remains one of the island’s most iconic and photogenic spots.

The village is still an active fishing hub, supplying much of Malta’s fresh catch, especially swordfish, tuna, and dolphinfish (lampuki), particularly between spring and autumn. During the week, the catch is sold in Valletta, while on Sundays, the harbor itself transforms into a bustling open-air fish market.

A walk along the waterfront promenade reveals a lively scene of seafood restaurants, cafés, and market stalls. It’s the perfect place to relax, enjoy the sea breeze, and watch the boats gently rocking in the bay. Just a few steps away, the parish church of Our Lady of Pompei stands proudly in the village square, offering a glimpse into the local religious and architectural heritage.

For those seeking a bit of adventure, boat tours are available around the bay and to nearby St. Peter’s Pool, a natural swimming spot known for its crystal-clear waters and dramatic rock formations. After a refreshing dip, visitors can return to the village to enjoy a meal of freshly grilled lampuki or a hearty octopus stew at one of the many waterfront eateries.

Wandering through the quieter backstreets reveals another side of Marsaxlokk—one of traditional Maltese architecture and a slower, more peaceful rhythm of life.

📝 Note: Marsaxlokk has become a preferred destination for visitors thanks to its charm and vibrant market. However, its growing popularity has led to a slight loss of its original authenticity, especially during peak tourist hours.

  • DISCOVER THE TEMPLES OF TARXIEN 📸Free Time & Self-guided Exploration

The megalithic temples of Tarxien perfectly reflect the construction techniques of the first civilizations that populated Malta. Marvel at this building from the year 2800 BC.

They are the most recent megalithic temples on the island and, therefore, the best preserved. In 1913, local farmers discovered them by accident and, later, the temples were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

This religious complex consists of four temples built between 3000 and 2500 BC. During the archaeological excavations, sharp objects and bones of animals were discovered which would suggest that funeral rites were practised inside with animal sacrifices.

In addition, many semicircular rooms have carved stone altars with spiral motifs. This type of decoration, which is repeated in other megalithic temples in Malta, refers to eternity and life.

Visiting the Tarxien temples, you can see the sculpture of an ancient fertility goddess.
